Role of FIFA

To begin with, FIFA were strongly opposed to Goal Line Technology or any technology for that matter. But following Frank Lampards disallowed goal in the 2010 world cup against Germany at the World Cup in South Africa, Fifa soon changed their mind.

Speaking in the video below, Blatter describes how the severity of the incident made him change his mind as he remarks "We could say it is a historic day for international football."

And whilst an exclusive number of leagues around the world are currently using the technology, the worlds biggest club competition: the UEFA champions league isnt. Uefa president Michel Platini believes it is wrong to implement goal-line technology due to the infrequency of goal-line incidents within games. It means there could be a situation where technology is used in Premier League and World Cup games but not the Champions League and Europa League. However, Blatter is confident Platini, who is in favour of using more assistant referees instead, will change his mind.
